Surgical Services Assistant

Under general supervision, but according to established policies and procedures, performs variety of non-medical duties in support of Surgical Services. Such activities include, but are not limited to, transporting patients to and from Operating Room; picking up and/or delivering supplies, materials, specimens, cultures and the like. Assists in preoperative scrubs; assists in lifting, positioning and supporting patients. Cleans and prepares equipment utilized in surgical procedures; prepares material for sterilization. Assists in cleaning and maintaining the operating rooms. Assembles charge form packets. Responsibilities:

• Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
• Reviews preoperative patient charts in order to ensure that all forms are signed and that all tests are completed; informs appropriate nursing personnel of discrepancy.
• Assists in surgical room preparation by ensuring basic supplies are available such as blankets, solutions, and syringes.
• Cleans furniture and equipment between cases.
• Obtains necessary supplies and equipment required for specific procedure.
• Assists in prepping patients for surgery; assists with preoperative scrubs; lifts and moves and positions patients, supports and holds patients for spinal anesthesia injection and the like.
• Routinely inventories, requisitions, receives and stocks supplies in established areas, including sterile linen, instruments, scrub clothes and the like in order to ensure availability to meet anticipated needs.
• Picks up supplies and materials for Surgical Services from various areas of the Hospital such as pharmaceuticals, blood and plasma, as well as routine supplies required by the department.
• Delivers cultures and surgery specimens to designated areas of the Hospital for analysis as appropriate.
• Assists in general cleaning and maintenance of the Operating Room such as washing equipment, sorting and stocking supplies, cleaning room, washing stretchers and changing light bulbs and the like.
• Cleans, dries, packages and seals a variety of supplies and material to be sterilized, such as washing, assembling and wrapping basin sets for sterilization.
• Occasionally operates steam/water pressure sterilizers in order to clean and sterilize items.
• Assembles patient record packs of charge slips, appropriate for specific surgical procedure, to be completed by others.

Minimum Qualifications:

Basic Knowledge:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Ability to recognized changes in patient's condition and report such to nursing personnel.
• Ability to perform simple numerical calculations in order to calculate and requisition supplies.
• Knowledge of aseptic techniques in order to ensure proper cleaning of rooms, equipment and materials.
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
• Ability to read, write and understand English, with ability to perform simple numerical calculations.

Experience:

• One to three months' on-the-job training and experience.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:

• Physical abilities to transport patients throughout the Hospital, to assist in lifting and positioning patients and to clean and set up equipment.
• Works in the Operating Room area and is exposed to odors, bodily fluids, etc. when assisting with patients.
• Required to work for extended periods in standing position when assisting with preoperative procedures.
• Some exposure to chemical fumes and infectious disease when cleaning equipment and rooms.
• Frequent standing, walking, lifting and carrying in order to clean equipment and replenish supplies, transport patients and materials and stock areas.
• Hazards of injury are minimized by adherence to established safety precautions.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.

Pay Range: $21.13-$21.65
